10 DAYS WITH THE BENJAMIN'S

Dennis and Jen came to visit us for Christmas! We had such a wonderful time with them. Ten days went way too fast...We were sad to see them go.
Our favorite time together was in San Antonio...what an awesome city!
Jen made Ava an awesome "Reepunzel" hat.
We sure enjoyed our time with them and hope they come to see us again. Maybe next time we'll have hot water to take showers. :)

WE WENT ON A DATE

It's been 2 years since the last time we had the evening to ourselves. Dennis and Jen were so kind to us. :) They watched Ava and Jaina while we went out to dinner at Red Lobster and went shopping. Thank you!
We need to do this more often!

JAINA GOES TO THE HOSPITAL

Two days after we found out that Jaina had RSV (Thursday, December 13th), she woke up with a heartbeat faster than I could count and rapid breathing. I called the doctor and got her in that morning. Long story short, they sent us to the hospital because they were were worried about her low oxygen levels. I didn't even have to fill out paperwork in admitting - "Head straight to the room. They know you're coming" they said. We got to hospital and the nurses quickly got to work hooking her up to oxygen and getting her IV in for saline and antibiotics. She had a chest x-ray done and it showed that she also had pneumonia on top of the RSV and ear infections.

The nurses tried three different times to get her IV in and by the time they were done, her heart rate had gone from 190 to 234 bpm. I was holding her in my arms and instead of the usual grin when we say "Jaina Mae!" there was no response. She stared at the ceiling with a glossy stare and didn't even blink. My poor baby. Her oxygen levels were between 84 and 88.
relaxing in her bed - hooked up to all her gadgets

By Saturday she was almost back to her smiley little self. Her oxygen levels were still low while she slept so they kept us another night. We got to go home Sunday. :) While we were there Dale and Patty, Brent and Mindi, Sharon and Sarah and Howard and Maryann came to visit.

AVAISMS

"Mom, Jen's name is JenAvengamin so we should call her JenAvenjamin."

"Mom, you're a good-"
"Mom, does Daddy call you a woman?"
"Yeah I think so.."
"Why? Why does he call you a woman?"

I was holding a butter knife waiting for her toast.
"Mom! Be careful! That's really cutty! It will cut you!"

"Ya know, God....He makes the weather so cold!"

"Mom, can you freeze this in the microwave?"

NEW WORD: "PRESIDENTS"
"You know God? He likes to give presidents to Jesus"

NEW WORD: "REALITY"
"What? You're just learning reality but your reality is still not a lot of learning"
(singing) "Reality, reality, reality."

"How did you make that? It's so beeauuutiful!"

SICKIES

Jaina has had a cough now for about a month. The past four days, it's gotten worse...a wet, nasty cough with lot's of congestion and a slowly rising fever. I took her to the Dr. today and they swabbed her nose and listened to her chest. The news is that she has RSV but her chest is clear. There's nothing they can do for it so it's lot's of rest and fluids for the little miss. It could get worse before it gets better and it will probably last for at least two weeks..maybe a month. So, we propped up her bed, plugged in the humidifier and slathered her with essential oils. Hopefully she'll get some rest tonight.

Ava has been in top form lately:

"Daddy, can we go out and frake?" (she means rake)

"Mom, when I'm hungry that means I'm hungry and when I say hungry, that's what it is so...."

She's decided that she only looks nice if she wears all the same color and it must be pink. This morning she said, with tears streaming down her cheeks after I told her she needed to wear a different skirt, "But Mom! I just need more pink!!!"

We've been giving her chores like changing out the garbage and putting away the silverware.

I've been in a funk lately. I don't know what it is but I've been crabby! Really need to turn this train around. :)

Donald. is. still. working. I appreciate what he does for our little family.

JAINA: 6 MONTHS

  • 17 lbs (80%)
  • 27 inches (90%)
  • head: 17.5 cm (92%)
  • two bottom teeth have poked through.
  • says "bah bah bah bah"
  • pulls up onto her hands and knees.
  • pulls herself by her arms and scoots everywhere!
  • loves laptop cords.
  • wakes up a couple times at night.
  • sits up by herself.
  • her scream is still unbearable. :)
  • I want to remember the dimples on her knuckles, the smell of her feet, the feel of her skin when I kiss the palm of her little hand, her tight grip around my finger, the way she reaches up to touch my face...

THANKSGIVING 2012

It was so great to spend Thanksgiving with the Gomez's this year! It was a family adventure to travel through states that we'd never been to...

 We ate the best food...
Made the best of friends...

And relaxed in the best kind of way!
Thank you so much for a wonderful vacation...We'll be back!

JAINA'S FIRST TOOTH

Miss Jaina has been extra fussy lately and now we know why! I felt the sharp little edge today...it's her bottom right tooth in the middle (I'm sure there's a real name for it) :)

Riding home from the grocery store, Ava had on a new pair of gloves and Donald and I were enjoying a little snack. Ava wanted some and said, "I'm gonna take off my gloves so I can eat it with my skin hands." :)

On not such a good note, Ava has learned how to lie to avoid getting in trouble. After a couple minutes of coaxing out the truth, the spilled medicine on her skirt went from just a little accident to a "pouring it down her throat because it tasted good." I gotta say, she's pretty good at it and didn't even crack a smile to give it away...need to keep an eye on her! Good thing there wasn't much medicine left...I told her that it can be very dangerous to take too much medicine and that she could die from it. She said, "I promise not to die anymore, Mama!"

...AND SHE'S MOVING!

She moves all over the place without crawling...it's a curious thing. :)
We've been forced into sleep training. She rarely falls asleep when I feed her now and I don't always have the time (or patience) to stand and bounce her. So the past couple of days I've been laying her in her bed and letting her cry. Last night she cried for less than 3 seconds and then fell asleep! Seriously, this kid is so easy! (knock on wood) The only side effect is that when she's playing out in the living room and I walk out of her sight, she screams her awful scream. :)
She's also learned what happens when she drops something over the side of her exersaucer. It's so cute to watch her push something over the edge and lean over as far as she can to find it. :)

HOW KIDS THINK

"Mama, why are there 3 Mamas?"
(yeah, I guess that could be confusing)

"Mama, does Santa Claus have claws?"
"No sweetie, he doesn't have claws."
"Yes he does because he's Santa Claws!"
(no wonder she doesn't like him)

Ava dresses up like Cinderella and calls me "Stepmother"...she calls Donald "Stepguy" :)

"Ava, how do you spell doughnut?"
"S-H-A-R-I-K-P"

Speaking of doughnuts...when Ava starts her whining and crying, Donald asks her if she wants a chocolate doughnut. She stops immediately and shakes her head yes. Obviously we don't give her chocolate doughnuts because she would be 100 lbs if we gave her one every time she threw a fit. :)

LATELY

It seems that there haven't been any huge events lately...just little day to day stuff that make our lives so awesome. :)

  • the weather has been much more pleasant. Anywhere from 60 - 80 degrees with a touch of fall in the air.
  • Kenny came to Texas and went to Mountain Peak with us. So good to see him.
  • Ava has been singing "Give Me a Heart" ...so sweet.
  • another good day at the market in Montgomery selling pecans...we enjoy our outings.
  • Ava has been so sweet. She tells me all day long, "I love you, Mama."
  • For some reason, she calls me "Mama" now.
  • Did I mention that Jaina said "Mama"? Pretty sure it was a fluke.
  • baby Ava and Jaina are alike in so many ways...crazy hair, the little noises they make when they eat, "humming" themselves to sleep...I love watching them grow.
  • Ava said today, "Mama, I love Jaina. She's so beautiful. She's my best sister."
  • the other day, Ava said, "Mama, have you ever seen a noodle chase a cow?"
  • Ava has been learning new words and it's hilarious to listen to her try to use them! She rambles on and on and makes no sense whatsoever. "It's no fair to get some resist on him!" Umm...what does that mean anyway?
  • Ava made her own PB&J sandwich today for the first time. She even cut the crust off.
  • I'm trying to treasure the 'in-between' days and make the most of them.
  • Ava's bedtime routine has changed to a tight hug and kiss on the lips. :)
  • Tap has been extra naughty lately...I wonder if he's mad at us.
  • I'm thankful for Skype and Facetime...it makes friends and family seem not so far away.

THE HEALING OF A SNAKE BIT TOE

  1. in the emergency room
  2. in the emergency room
  3. three days
  4. three days
  5. one week
  6. week and a half
  7. two weeks
  8. almost three weeks - I peeled the blister. See the fang marks?
  9. four weeks
It's been almost 7 weeks now and my toe is almost back to normal. There is still some redness and my toe feels numb and sensitive at the same time. Ava and Donald both have boots...I still have to find a good comfortable pair. :)

JAINA: 5 MONTHS

  • 17.6 lbs
  • fits perfectly into 9 month clothes
  • after a dozen leaky diapers, I bought a box of size 4. One thing I've learned is that the weight range printed on the box of diapers is pointless. There are only a couple of reasons why diapers leak time after time...too small or too big. So, even though the range for size 4's is something like 22-37 lbs, we're having much better luck.
  • she can sit and prop herself up by her arms but it doesn't last long.
  • she loves Tap..he makes her smile and laugh without doing a thing.
  • she definitely knows her name.
  • I think she said "mama" the other day but I'm sure that she has no clue what it means.
  • she loves to eat. Sweet potatoes are her favorite and she makes a "mmmmmm" noise with every bite just like her big sister did when she was a baby.
  • her hair is growing...it's coming in blonde and you can see the line of color change...just like Ava's was.
  • I still rock and nurse her to sleep...I cherish those quiet moments with her, knowing that she'll be putting herself to sleep soon enough.
  • she's social and likes to be held.
  • she's working on getting some teeth...chew, chew, chew.
  • her scream is piercing. It's awful.
  • she's just getting over her first cold.
  • found her ears (I guess grabbing at them does not mean she has an ear infection even though finding her ears and having her first cold would lead one to believe that infection could be possible)
  • found her hair...and she pulls it...hard.
  • I can't be sure but she might be left handed...wonder if this will be effected by her broken clavicle?
  • loves the pat-a-cake song (especially the "roll it, roll it" part)
  • grabs at everything.
  • scoots all over on her tummy.
  • does anyone else think that she looks like Uncle John in this picture?

A SWEET GOODBYE

Ava's friend Dixie and her family just moved to Arkansas. We'll miss you more than you know. ;)

MOUNTAIN PEAK CONVENTION

Our first convention in Texas was wonderful. The weather was perfectly cool. Ava found a new friend...Her name is Ari. Convention with kids is never easy but there's unspeakable joy when they love convention and don't want to leave.
We were lucky enough to be able to stay in a trailer...Tap had his first stay at the doggie hotel. :)

LITTLE COWGIRL

I absolutely love Ava's new boots...not only do the protect her from snakes a little bit better than her sandals, they are so adorable and they fit her perfectly. :)

JAINA: 4 MONTHS

  • 16.9 lbs (95%)
  • 25 3/4 inches (95%)
  • head size: 16 3/4 cm (90%)
  • Size 3 diapers and gradually growing into 9 month clothes.
  • Sleeps at least 6 hours straight at night.
  • Learned a new trick! let's see how far I can stick out this tongue!
  • Loves to blow bubbles and soaks her shirt in the process!
  • Good at grabbing and chewing. Her hands taste the best. :)
  • Rolled from her tummy to her back at 3 1/2 months! (9/17/12) Now she rolls all over the place but mostly just from her back to her tummy.
  • Likes to stand up.
  • Ate her first solid food on her 4 month birthday (we're probably breaking some kind of baby rule) She's eaten rice cereal, sweet potatoes, pears, peaches (sour face!) and prunes. She eats like and champ and hardly makes a mess!
  • Has the cutest little flirty grin and loves to laugh!
  • Happy and content. (most of the time)
  • She's been spitting up - a lot.
  • Recognizes her name.
  • Found her toes!!
  • (thank you, hormones, for making my hair fall out by the handful....I should be completely bald by the end of the month if it keeps going at this rate!)

OPHIDIOPHOBIA?

We visited some friends this evening...We got home about 9 pm. I opened the car door...and couldn't get out. I couldn't put my foot on the ground. Irrational, I know. Remember when you were a little kid (well I still do this sometimes) and you'd run and jump into your bed because you were afraid something was under there? Well, I felt like that getting into the car and getting out of it was just plain freaky. I fully expected a snake to come streaking out from under there just to bite me. I just waited for the pain. Whew! Made it to the house!

Ava no longer likes to get dressed in the morning...she just hangs out in her underwear all day.

Ava has also been full fledged into the "why?" phase for awhile.

The other day we were talking to Andrea on Skype about juicing...Andrea said that if she could just drink "Naked" juice every day she could totally handle it. Ava asked, "What about clothes juice?" :)

COPPERHEAD SNAKE

Copperhead Snake - this is not a picture of the snake that bit me.
On September 18th we made our second trip to the emergency room this month. This time it was for a snake bite. We got home from town at about 8 pm and I stepped out of the car and opened the door behind me to get Ava. All of a sudden there was a searing pain in my left big toe. I screamed. I looked down. There was nothing there but severe pain. I ran into the house screaming and got a cold wet rag from the sink, sat on the floor and held my toe for dear life. Donald thought I was playing a joke. This was no joke. He manage to get Ava and Jaina out of the car and then went to look for whatever it was that bit me. I hollered at him to get the neighbor as he went out the door. The neighbors came over and I heard the man say, "Oh yeah, that's a copperhead." I screamed some more. I thought I was dying. The lady told me that I had 12 hours to get to the hospital. 12 hours!?! Is this a matter of life or death?? I was shocked. She offered to take the girls while we went to the hospital so Ava stayed with them. I didn't get to see the snake before we left for the hospital because it took all I could give to just get to the car. By the time we got to the hospital I had calmed down quite a bit but upon arriving and the unknowns of what was going to happen, I cried again. Donald went to park the car and a man walking out asked me if I was ok. He walked me to my seat and brought my paper to fill out. Then he said, "Ma'am, I'm gonna go out a smoke a cigarette and I'll be back to help you." I couldn't form the thoughts in my brain to fill out my name and birthday. Finally I managed and the man's son brought it back to the counter for me. The man came back, bent down in front of me and said, "Ma'am, you gotta calm down. You just gotta calm down. I know it hurts but you gotta just calm down." Yeah right. I was going to throw up...Donald got me the garbage can. Nothing happened. I was going to pass out. My head dropped to the back of the chair and I laid there and listened to the voices in the distance. Triage asked me on a scale of 1 to 10, at what level was my pain. I said 20. They got me in right away. The nurse came in a took my blood. The Dr. came in drew lines on my foot. They told me they would monitor the bite for awhile. Phone calls to friends and family helped to keep my mind off of the pain. They finally gave me ibuprofen for pain and a prescription for Clindamycin.
At 11:45 the nurse came back, gave me a tetanus shot and my release papers. I hobbled out. The pain was so severe that the air blowing from the vent in the car hurt it. We got home just a bit after midnight and picked up Ava. So thankful for good neighbors. By the time we got home, the fire ants had eaten most of the snake so I never go to see the bugger that bit me!
I've spent the past 3 days in bed. Donald has been running the house. :) The pressure from the swelling is intense.
I tried to release the pressure. Probably not a good idea. I sent a picture to Uncle Rob last night because I was getting a little worried. He kindly sent me a response that set my mind at ease.
"What I see in the picture is very typical, the hemorrhagic blister is normal after a snake bite. So I am not worried about that. The severe pain is also typical. You should try to elevate the foot above your heart as much as possible. Prop it up on some pillows. Take ibuprofen 600 mg (3 otc tabs) every 6 hours. They also recommend that you wrap some gauze padding around the toes to cushion it from touching anything. Don't pop the blister. Watch for spreading redness up your foot that could indicate a secondary bacterial infection although this is unlikely after a snake bite. I assume your tetanus immunization is up to date. If you have a doctor you could ask him for some stronger pain medications; the elevation and ibuprofen should help."
I'm so glad the snake didn't get Ava. I wouldn't wish this on anyone. I know that this is mild compared to what other people go through but it's a first (and hopefully a last) for me. We've learned that Copperheads give live birth during the first two weeks of September. As the nights cool down, they come out and lay on warm rocks and cement. That would probably explain why there was a snake on our driveway. It wasn't a big snake...Donald said it was about 10 inches. We're looking forward to October when snakes go into hibernation...In the meantime, I have a pair of cowgirl boots all picked out. :)

JUST A GAS BUBBLE

A couple of weeks ago (September 4th) Ava had her first emergency room visit. We had just picked up Uncle Lyle from the airport in Houston and we were relaxing and enjoying our first evening with him. Ava ran into the bedroom and told me that she had to go to the bathroom...she went...and then started crying and screaming on the toilet. I went in to help her and she wouldn't stop crying. I picked her up and held her...still crying, thrashing and grabbing at her belly button. We tried a couple of things to calm her down..laying in bed...a warm bath...Finally, we decided to take her in. We took her to a 24 hour emergency center but after an hour, she was still thrashing and crying. They gave her Tylenol, told us that they thought she had a twisted bowel and sent us to St. Luke's Emergency in The Woodlands. By the time we got there (8:30pm) she had calmed down 100%. We thought it was probably because of the Tylenol and waited until 11:30 to get in to see the Dr. The Dr. poked around, tapped on her tummy and told us that she just had a big gas bubble. Ava said, "A bubble? What's a bubble?" Silly girl...so the Dr. left and came back with a bottle of bubbles. Now that's service. :) She hasn't complained of a tummy ache since...that will be one expensive gas bubble!

BACK TO BASICS

I went on my first run today! 2 whole miles! It definitely was not easy but it sure felt good. It was a misty kind of morning, the air was cool and the trees were filled the sounds of strange birds and bugs.

Jaina has had 2 good nights in a row after 2 weeks of "up all night." It's been amazing. :)

Ava has been especially wild. Her "little will" as Lyle calls it, needs to be B.R.O.K.E.N. I am amazed at how naughty she can be one minute and how sweet and adorable she is the next.
This morning she told me she had a "frog in her froat." :)

Post pregnancy hormones are awesome. At the rate I'm losing my hair, I feel that I'll be bald in a week!!

Proof that my husband works too much:
He went to the bedroom to change his clothes so that we could go to town. I asked him if he was going to wear some pants when I saw him by the door putting on his shoes wearing just a shirt and underwear. He won't admit that he forgot his pants - he'll tell you he was trying to make me laugh. Hilarious.

SATURDAY OUTING

We went to Montgomery today. I should have taken pictures. It was the First Saturday Market today and as we walked through the handful of tents selling various goodies, we could hear the old time country music drifting through the trees. Five old guys in cowboy boots and hats strumming electric guitars and playing the fiddle. Fantastic. The heat kept us moving and as we headed back to the car, we noticed a barber shop. Donald needed a haircut. I've been encouraging him to have someone else cut his hair because I don't enjoy the job at all. We walked up the ramp and pushed open the door. The room was filled with dead animals...everything from blow fish to turkeys to various 4 legged beasts. The barber was a large man wearing a huge smock type thing with large scissors and other hair cutting tools printed on it. On his head was a captains hat. The conversation he was having with his customer was intriguing... something about making religion a law and the government saying that religion and salvation are the same thing...then on to gun control...then to lawyers to make dumb laws...He did more talking than cutting it seemed. Donald's turn. He sat up in the chair and the first thing he said was, "I've been cutting hair for 44 years...after you do something that long it's just reflex." Hmmm...44 years ought to guarantee you a good haircut. Nope. As he went after Donald's head with the clippers he said, "Let me tell you something. If your doing something and it's hard to do, you don't know what you're doing." He doesn't know how close to home that was!! Ha! He was about done and I thought, "Surely he can't be finished!" So I suggested he shorten up the sides a bit...bad idea. The conversation turned to the violin hanging on the wall and I asked if he would play us a tune. As he took it down we notice the cord plugged into it. An electric violin? Yes, but the electric sound was being pumped out into the parking lot behind the shop. Ava danced as he serenaded the town for at least 10 minutes with 'not really in tune' "Puff the Magic Dragon" and "Amazing Grace." He was a cool old guy with lot's of personality and charm...some might say he was hilarious... definitely not they type of person you meet every day. :) $12, a bad haircut and more Texas culture than we needed for the day later, we left in search of someplace to eat. On a cooler day, we'd like to spend more time exploring all of the shops...there's some pretty interesting stuff.
On the way home, I saw a sign that said, "Lake Forest Falls." In my mind I instantly pictured a lush green. mossy forest...a pristine river...and a mountain. Yep, a mountain. Oops...I forgot this isn't Oregon. I did a U-turn, hoping for something that I had pictured in my mind. Donald had his doubts. We drove down Old Highway 105 and there was a brown wooden sign that again said, "Lake Forest Falls." It seemed "woodsy" to me so I kept driving. Guess what it was. A subdivision. I will never be fooled again by signs that say things like "Canyon Falls" or "Cascade Spring."
Then we went shopping. It was a perfect day spent with my "perfect" little family. :)

LAST ONE!

Ava is done teething..finally. Her last two year molar just came through sometime last month...Just in time for Jaina to start. Yippee :)

AVA'S BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION

Ava had a great birthday weekend. We kicked it off on Friday morning by having a full fledged temper tantrum because her ponytail was too tight. The terrific 3's...I think someone warned me about this - the terrible 2's are nothing compared to the terrific 3's...say it isn't so!!!
Friday night, Ava went with Ann and Danelle to see the play "Cinderella" in Conroe...she loved it!!! I wish I could have gone to see her reaction but I didn't plan ahead to leave Jaina with Daddy. All she talks about now is Cinderella, the step sisters and the handsome prince. :)

Saturday was her party and all she wanted was a chocolate cake with candy sprinkles! True to the Panamanian tradition, Yvonne smeared a little bit of frosting on her cheek after we sang "Happy Birthday." She loved her party and all of her presents. Thank you to all who came and made her day so special.
She ended the day by talking to Uncle Lyle on Facetime...she loves her princess stuff.
Today we played with birthday presents and ate leftovers...
